Alderwoman to resign Friday
October 1, 2015
Seventh ward Alderman Monica O’Leary said she will be resigning from her alderperson position Friday in an email to DeKalb Mayor John Rey.
Rey read the email aloud Monday prior to the start of the City Council regular meeting and said he received it just hours before. O’Leary was not present at the meeting.
“The expressed intent from Alderman O’Leary in it sounds to me… like effective Friday,” Rey said. “So we’ll anticipate that communication.”
Sixth ward Alderman Dave Baker said he was shocked about O’Leary’s plan to resign from the council, and said she was a great mother and had a great family.
“I urge you not to resign,” Baker said. “… You are still in standing to be on the council. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. You are still the 7th ward alderperson. You do not have to resign.”
O’Leary did not respond to a request for comment.
