Depp kills in realistic portrayal

Johnny Depp’s ability to morph into character in “Black Mass” is undeniable and serves as a testament to his versatility as an actor.

Based on true events, the movie is centered on Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger, played by Depp, who voluntarily agrees to become an informant to protect his Irish turf in South Boston in the mid 1970s.

The plot thickens when Depp’s character continues his pursuit in becoming Boston’s most notorious gang member, all while feeding information to the Feds. The relationship between Whitey and FBI agent James Connolly, played by Joel Edgerton, begins to spiral out of control when Bulger doesn’t provide concrete information, causing Connolly to lose his job.

Depp never shorts any of his roles, and “Black Mass” is no exception. His piercing eyes were in almost every scene and made the role extremely believable. As an actor, Depp is notorious for his un-human like characters, including Edward Scissorhands and Willy Wonka. It is evident in this movie how versatile of an actor Depp can be when he plays a serious, intense and humanistic role.

I was blown away by his precision in portraying Bulger. The Boston accents were spot on during the film, which made events seem to come alive. The end of the movie presented facts that concluded the infamous case of Bulger.

Don’t worry about sleeping while watching this movie; there were plenty of gunshots to keep you wide awake. If you’re into blood splatters and the sounds of fists hitting faces, this is definitely the flick for you.
