NIU women’s tennis: No postseason for Huskies

By Frank Gogola

Women’s tennis failed to qualify for the MAC Championships as it went 0-2 over the weekend to close the season.

The Huskies (11-9, 2-6 MAC) dropped a 6-1 decision to the Akron Zips on Friday in Akron, Ohio. Their hopes were dashed when they lost, 4-3, to the Buffalo Bulls on Saturday in Akron.

NIU’s 2-6 conference mark placed first-year head coach Tanya Gombera’s squad eighth out of nine teams in the MAC. The top six teams qualify for the MAC Championships.

The Huskies sat at 2-1 in MAC play following a victory over the Toledo Rockets on March 27. Their season ended on a five-match losing streak, three of which came in 4-3 scores.

This season marks the second time in 10 years that the Huskies won multiple conference games. The Huskies went 2-17 in the season before this year’s graduating class came in.

“I and the whole senior class graduating helped to lay a new foundation,” said senior Nelle Youel. “Now we have a new coach and the atmosphere and everything about the program is changing in a positive way. Yeah, we didn’t make a tournament [in four years], but there’s a bright future here. Me and the others seniors are proud of what we’ve done.”
