SA Senate approves eight directors

By Ashley Morse

Correction: The Northern Star incorrectly reported the names of two Student Association director positions as the director of Student Affairs and director of Community Service. The correct titles are director of Student Life and director of Organizational Development, respectively.

Eight students were confirmed for Student Association director positions at an SA Senate meeting Sunday, leaving three director positions vacant.

The applications for director positions were originally due April 10, but the deadline was extended to April 16 due to the lack of applicants, according to an April 13 Northern Star article. There are 11 director positions; however, the position of director of Academic Affairs was left open due to a lack of applicants and the two appointees for the remaining positions were not approved.

The directors are appointed by the SA president or vice president and then confirmed by the SA Senate. All director candidates have to be confirmed by the majority of the SA Senate prior to the last SA Senate meeting of the academic year.

Former SA Senator Gregory Lezon was confirmed chief of staff at the last SA Senate meeting April 19.

Director of Public Affairs

Junior English major Ariel Owens said she was involved with the National Association of Black Journalists and was formerly involved with Residence Hall Council at Neptune Hall and was a columnist for the Northern Star. Owens was confirmed as the director of Public Affairs with a 20-10 vote.

Director of Athletics and Recreation

Michael Agro, junior public health administration major, served as an SA senator up until his appointment as director of Athletics with a 21-10 vote. Agro said he has worked closely with Alex Fitch, current director of Athletics and Recreation, for several months. As a senator, Argo said he was in charge of setting up tailgating for SA Senate at football games.

Director of Cultural Affairs

Senior communication major Sergio Gutierrez said he serves as the president of the Sigma Lambda Beta fraternity and has experience setting up Greek life events. Gutierrez was appointed director of Cultural Affairs.

Director of Governmental Affairs

Kiran Gill, junior political science major, said she hopes to attend law school after graduating. Gill said she wanted this position to “get as much exposure to [her] field.” Gill was confirmed as director of Governmental Affairs with a voice vote.

Director of Information Technology

Jevonte Marshall is the current director of Information Technology and was looking to serve a second year in the position. Marshall said he wanted to run again because he wanted to “push the horizons on this position” and receive more experience. The Senate approved his appointment with a voice vote.

Director of Mass Transit

SA Senator Rob Jusino said he worked closely with Brett Williams, current director of Mass Transit, prior to applying for the position. Jusino said he hopes to incorporate the Huskie Pups, electric vehicles designed to transport students through campus, into Mass Transit if appointed. He was selected by the Senate with a voice vote.

Director of Student Affairs

Senator Miki Grace, current vice president of the Black Student Union, said she has been involved with the Senate since her freshman year. Last year, she said she helped modify Late Night Ride, a late-night transportation service provided to students before the creation of the Huskie Safe Line this fall. Grace was appointed director of Student Affairs with a 17-11 vote.

Director of Community Service

Senator Marvin Harris said he wanted to use the position of director of Community Service to train as an executive board member. The Senate confirmed Harris with a 15-14 vote.

Jaclyn Keith and Carly Christenson were not confirmed to serve on the president’s cabinet. Keith applied for the director of Greek Affairs and Christenson applied for director of Advertising. Those positions remain vacant.
