Community Gardens leader pushes for food hub to get produce to NIU
February 16, 2015
Executive Director Dan Kenney said the DeKalb County Community Gardens is starting a program called the Northern Illinois Regional Food Hub and Processing Center to help NIU get fresh produce for residence hall food.
Kenney said he also started the program to help ensure people are getting locally grown foods.
“People are concerned on where they’re getting their food from,” Kenney said. “So, we wanted to help make sure that they’re getting food from around the local area.”
The group had its first meeting on Feb. 5 and will meet again on March 5 at the DeKalb County Community Outreach Building, 2500 N. Annie Glidden Drive. Kenney said anyone who is interested in having a local food processing hub or is just interested in growing food is welcome to come to the meetings.
