NIU baseball: Huskies open 3-game set vs. Tennessee Tech with win

Baseball returns to Tennessee, the state in which it opened the season 3-0 before being swept in Texas this past weekend.

The Huskies (4-4) will take on the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles (4-3) in a three-game series this weekend with the two final games 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. in Cookeville, Tenn. The Huskies beat the Golden Eagles, 4-2, today.

The Huskies, guided by first-year head coach Mike Kunigonis, opened up the season with a pair of wins against South Dakota State and a win against Niagara Feb. 13-15 in Clarksville, Tenn. They were promptly brought back down to Earth when they were swept and outscored 25-4 by the No. 5 Texas Tech Red Raiders Friday and Saturday in Lubbock, Texas.

The Huskies have scored 38 runs and are batting .266 through seven games. The Golden Eagles have scored 50 runs and are hitting .299 through six games.

Friday: Senior LHP Ben Neumann picked up his first win of the season, improving to 1-1. He didn’t allow a hit or run in six innings, striking out six batters and walking three.

Saturday: Redshirt junior RHP Joe Ceja (0-1)

Sunday: Senior RHP Dirk Ormsby (1-1)
