NIU’s enrollment, retention falls: ‘Our enrollments are not where they need to be,’ Baker says
January 28, 2015
NIU’s enrollment and fall to spring retention has fallen when compared to last spring’s numbers.
Enrollment stands at 19,000 students, down 507 students from last spring. Retention between the fall and spring fell 1.2 percent to 87 percent.
NIU President Doug Baker said improving fall to spring retention would be a goal of NIU’s after fall 2014 numbers showed freshman retention had improved while overall enrollment fell from the year before. Baker’s administration set a goal to see retention between the fall and spring rise to 95 percent from the traditional 90 percent.
Eric Weldy, vice president of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, announced the enrollment numbers at a Wednesday University Council meeting.
“We [have] some work to do,” Baker said at University Council. “Our enrollments are not where they need to be.”
