Superhero, sci-fi releases make 2015 look fantastic

By Andrew Roberts

For comic book enthusiasts, sci-fi fans and all-around moviegoers, 2015 is going to be an excellent year to go to the movies.

Here are some films you should look out for:

“Avengers: Age of Ultron”

This highly anticipated follow-up to one of the greatest superhero collaborations of all time will feature familiar faces like Captain America, the Incredible Hulk and Thor pitted against Ultron, a rogue artificial intelligence.

Ultron was originally dormant but was reprogrammed by Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, in an attempt to alleviate violence. This plan goes horribly wrong when Ultron strives to stop the violence by killing the main cause of it: humans.

Based on the last Avengers movie, audiences can expect massive superhero battles and witty dialogue in this sequel. If its ominous trailer revealed anything, Ultron will be one of Marvel’s most terrifying villains yet.

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” will be released May 1.

“Ant-Man”

The little movie that no-one expected: This film stars Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, a miniscule hero from Marvel Comics who wields a suit with the power to shrink him to the size of his insect namesake.

The suit shrinks Ant-Man’s body, but it increases his strength. Ant-Man is Scott Lang, a criminal who is given a second chance by Hank Pym, the creator of the Ant-Man technology.

In the comic books, Pym was the original Ant-Man and a founding member of the Avengers, so it should be interesting to see how the movie portrays this aged version of the character, played by Michael Douglas.

“Ant-Man” will be released July 17.

“The Fantastic Four”

A modern reboot by 20th Century Fox of Marvel’s first superhero team, this is the first Fantastic Four movie since 2007’s horrendous “Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer.”

This movie will be an oddity in its own right. The characters will be much different from their comic book counterparts. Susan and Johnny Storm — Invisible Woman and the Human Torch, respectively — are brother and sister in the comic books, but Johnny Storm will be portrayed by black actor Michael B. Jordan and Sue Storm by white actress Kate Mara. This is unexpected, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

The traditionally opposing arch-nemesis of the team, Doctor Doom, will be a computer programmer and blogger known as “Doom.” This is far from the terrifying villain of the comics. I am cautiously optimistic for this film. The choice to cast the talented Jordan will most likely be a good one, but making Doctor Doom a nerdy, anti-social shell of his former self will certainly cause many fans to cry foul.

“The Fantastic Four” will be released Aug. 7.

“Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens”

If possible, I would write this column in all caps to express my utter excitement for this monumental entry into the Star Wars universe. But, I’ll save you the headache and simply state this: This movie is going to be huge.

With Director J.J. Abrams and an exciting new direction, “The Force Awakens” is an excellent step forward for a series that has seen years of mediocre prequels. The cast of the original films will be returning and there will be fresh new faces. Rather than cashing out and hiring big-name actors, relatively obscure yet enormously talented actors and actresses will be performing in the movie.

The plot details have yet to be revealed. The script was written by Abrams in collaboration with Oscar-nominated screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan from the original films.

The anticipation for this film is extraordinary, and I will be in the front row when it releases Dec. 18.
