Lil Wayne’s “Sorry 4 the Wait 2” lyrics unoriginal in being obscene, sexist, but tape has catchy snaps

Lil Wayne’s “Sorry 4 the Wait 2,” released Tuesday, is anything but fresh.

The mixtape is filled with eerie, uncomfortable sounds accompanied by lyrics about sex, drugs and twerking. “Sorry 4 the Wait 2” serves as an apology to his fans for the delay of Wayne’s ninth album, “Tha Carter V.”

Wayne is successful in making tracks people can dance to at clubs or house parties, but he’s unsuccessful in providing meaningful lyrics. He does an explicitly good job at making women feel like trophies rather than human beings.

Standout songs

The better parts of “Sorry” include Wayne’s rendition of Beyonce and Jay Z’s “Drunk in Love.” Wayne, accompanied by Christina Milian, puts a twist on the popular song by introducing a slow, calming piano followed by jazzy snaps.

“You Guessed It,” a cocky track, showcases Wayne’s ability to remain superior to the haters by being gangster. He repeatedly apologizes, “I’m sorry for the wait” in addition to accusing people of “being jealous” — that it’s “written all over your fuckin’ face.”

“Alphabet” lists all the women Wayne’s either been with, hooked up with or knows. At the end of each verse, he confidently slurs in a high, drunk tone, “these are my bitches, these are my alphabet bitches.” He goes into disturbingly graphic detail about “swimming in that thing like an aquarium.” The song is fitting and something I’d expect from Wayne, as he undermines women and only finds them useful and attractive because of their physical appearance and what they can do in the bedroom.

“No Haters” is one of Wayne’s more playful songs: He talks about having sex with one of his girlfriend’s friends. He also talks about his ability to go at it for long periods of time to the point where “it feel like exercising.” As show in this and previous tracks, Wayne still has the ability to make women feel inferior by calling them b—-es. This frequently occurs in “Admit It,” featuring Shanell, where he explicitly describes the type of girl he likes in the bedroom: “The type that wanna suck you dry then have some lunch with you.”

Disappointing result

“Sorry 4 The Wait 2” is filled with too much sexual and drug content, but it is backed up with peaceful pianos and unique beats, including catchy snaps. Rather than being something you could listen to on a daily basis, “Sorry 4 The Wait 2” is a discomforting attempt at making a mixtape — it’s something someone could listen to only while they’re intoxicated, high or in the mood to make love.

The hypnotizing, dreamy, catchy beats are the strongest and weakest part of the album. While I don’t mind listening to rap, Wayne takes this record a little too far by putting women’s bodies out in the open while carelessly rapping about getting high or drunk with his friends. When he collaborates with artists like Milian and Shanell, the song sounds great; when he’s by himself, the result is unpleasantly vulgar.
