Teams battle for laughs at WildN’ Out

Students will decide the winners of Black Theater Workshop’s WildN’ Out improv comedy competition Nov. 20.

The WildN’ Out battle — derived from sketch comedy and improv television series “Nick Cannon Presents: Wild ‘N Out” — is a program which showcases Black Theatre Workshop actors’ talent and allows the audience to determine the winners through laughter.

There was an open call for students of all majors to audition to be part of the competition. Once selected, students were randomly divided into two teams and each elected a team captain. Team Platinum will be led by Zierra Jackson, junior psychology major at Kishwaukee College, and Team Black will be led by Demone “D.W.” Williams, junior family and child studies major.

In each round, teams will act out a comedic scene. Based on the audience’s reaction, the team members will receive a “ding,” meaning they’ve received the winning point for the round, or a “bong” if they’ve lost the round. DJ Rainn will host the program and decide which team will win the points based on the audience’s reaction.

Sophomore journalism major Jordan Clayton-Taylor and Sommer Lee, senior family individual development major, teamed up to make the Black Theater Workshop’s version of “Wild ’N Out” possible.

“This is what we do; our members pretty much specialize in doing improv,” Lee said. “This is something that we practice in our meetings, so this is not something we just do for fun, this is who we are.”

Lee credited the Liberated Minds Organization for starting off the “Wild ‘N Out” trend on campus a few years ago, as well as a partnership with the Black Student Union, which held a “Wild ‘N Out” program in October 2013.

Clayton-Taylor said she hopes the program gets to people outside of the black community so people can learn more about Black Theatre Workshop.

Jackson, who participated in a previous “Wild ‘N Out” program, said she is eager to return to the stage.

“I actually love the fact I’m captain,” Jackson said. “I’ve got a great group of people that I vibe well with and I love my team. We’re actually very prepared for this show and I have faith in my team that we’re just going to go out there and put smiles on people’s faces and make everyone laugh. Basically, right now we’re strategizing and we’re not underestimating our opponents at all. To be honest, we’re getting the dirty dirt on them right now because we’re coming ready — so ready.”
