Dance groups combine for Unity Show

Instead of competing, dancers will share the stage Friday in co-ed dance fraternity Delta Phi Delta’s Unity Show.

Dance organizations will perform at the third annual show 7 p.m. Friday at the Holmes Student Center, Carl Sandburg Auditorium. The event will include individual performances from dance teams and close with a collective performance from the teams.

“The show will be a lot more dancing compared to last year,” said La’Vannah Roberson, Delta Phi Delta president and senior communication major. “What’s unique about this show is the excitement level. Our theme is ‘American Horror Story,’ so it’s going to be like you’re watching the show.”

Alumnus Derrell Brown created the dance show in 2011 and said he wanted it to unite dance teams across campus and beyond.

“When I first came to NIU, the dance teams had big rivalries and it was a really big thing,” Brown said. “I wanted to create a show that brought us together.”

Performers and dance teams will be featured during the performance with genres varying from hip-hop to ballet.

“You’ll see different dance teams perform individually,” said Bernadette Chatman, Delta Phi Delta community service coordinator and junior special education major. “Towards the end of the performance, you’ll see different teams come together as one and perform.”

Dance groups such as Envy Dance Team, Lethal Weapon and Vanity Dance Team will showcase their moves in the final performance.

The Unity Show will also include Chicago performance group 3rd Dimension, singing performances and a deejay.
