Get festive with DIY room decorations, ornaments

By Emma Harvey

We’re not all Martha Stewart, but decorating your room for the holidays doesn’t have to be as hard as that Contemporary Moral Issues final.

From boxes come childhood crafts that have somehow managed to survive another year. But, if you’re not really into bringing ornaments to college, bring the holiday cheer into your room with these three holiday decorations.

Paper Ornaments

Materials:

  • Colored paper
  • Binder tabs
  • Tape
  • String

Directions:

Cut one sheet of 8.5-by-11-inch paper into eight long, even strips (folding the paper accordion-style first helps). Cut one strip down to about 4 inches. Pair the remaining strips and cut each one so one pair is 5 inches, the next pair is 7 inches and the final pair is 9 inches.

Take the 5-7-inch strips and place them on either side of the 4-inch strip. Line up the tops of the paper strips so they are all even.

Poke through the paper with a binder tab and fold over the sides. Do the same at the bottom with another binder tab. As the 5-inch strips start to bubble out, crease them in the middle to form a triangular shape. Repeat this process with the 7-inch and 9-inch strips.

Your paper ornament can be easily hung from the ceiling of your room with handy string and tape. Cut the paper shorter to create different-sized ornaments or use multiple colors of paper for one ornament.

Snowy Garland

Materials:

  • 8.5-by-11-inch sheets of white paper
  • Scissors
  • Blue ribbon

Directions:

Fold a sheet of white paper on itself so you have a triangle and cut out whatever design your heart desires.

Unfold your snowflakes and attach them to some ribbon to string around your room or have some holiday roommate bonding time by decorating clothespins with which to hang your snowflakes.

Paint Trees

Materials:

  • Paint chips
  • Tape or glue

Directions:

Cut a tiered green paint chip into a triangular tree shape with a brown chip as your trunk. Glue on sequins and glitter to decorate your DIY tree.
