Homecoming Playlist
October 8, 2014
Homecoming, or in layman’s term “coming home,” requires a groundbreaking, epic playlist to act as one’s survival guide.
I’m being modest when I say listening to my profoundly prolific Homecoming mixtape is like finding out Professor Albus Dumbledore is your grandfather and you’ll be spending Christmas at Hogwarts.
“Remember the Titans” soundtrack
Maybe you don’t watch a lot of football, but you love a good Denzel Washington movie. This album has great tracks like “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” Maybe I’ll watch the movie one or three times.
“Tears in Heaven” by Eric Clapton
Dangit, I missed the Homecoming game. Curse you, Denzel Washington, for being such a captivating and handsome actor. Enough movies; time to party.
“Fire” by The Jimi Hendrix Experience
I could listen to Hendrix at any time of the day, but with André 3000 of Outkast playing the famous guitarist in the movie “Jimi: All Is by My Side,” I have something to talk about with party-goers. “What’s your favorite Outkast song? ‘Hey, Ya!’? I guess we just have a difference of opinion.”
“Ms. Jackson” by Outkast
What a great song. I turn this track up to 11 because it tickles my bones when André 3000 hits those high notes in the chorus. Have you heard a song that nails a note like that? Perhaps, but keep your thoughts to yourself, please. I nod my head as my “Hey Ya!” friend gives me a dirty look. “Play it again?”
“Ms. Jackson” by Outkast
It’s just as good the second time you hear it.
“A Charlie Brown Christmas” album by Vince Guaraldi Trio
It’s never too early for holiday music. Although I love a good Christmas song, especially from this album, the attendees at this party ask me to leave.
“Where Is the Love?” by The Black Eyed Peas
Respect the deejay, friends. Well, looks like I just got the boot. Those people weren’t my cup of tea, anyway.
“I Think We’re Alone Now” by Tommy James and the Shondells
Man, I really wish I had someone to share this song with. This Homecoming playlist has taken a turn for the worst. Maybe it’s time to talk to mom and dad.
“September” by Earth, Wind & Fire
After a great pep talk, I’m ready for round two. Thanks, parents. You may overuse emojis and ellipsis, but I respect your efforts.
“In da Club” by 50 Cent
These floors are really sticky and the bartender doesn’t even take Huskie Bucks. That’s OK because most of the people here were at the football game and can fill me in.
Alphabet song
On my way home, someone sings this to an officer. Hope they’re OK.
“Huskie Fight Song”
Every night, I sing everyone on my floor the “Huskie Fight Song” lullaby version until they fall asleep. Goodnight, sweet huskies.
