Men’s golf preps for final fall tourney
October 12, 2014
Men’s golf is looking to wrap up the fall season by picking up more momentum.
The Huskies will travel to the Sagamore Fall Preview Monday and Tuesday in Noblesville, Ind. MAC rival Ball State hosts the tournament at the Sagamore Golf Club, which will be home to the 2015 NCAA Regionals.
There will a strong field at Sagamore with No. 1 Illinois and No. 8 Auburn at the top. NIU will also go against MAC foes Akron, Toledo and Eastern Michigan.
Head coach Tom Porten said the Huskies are going to build on the steam they picked up from the Erin Hills Intercollegiate Tuesday. They shot 291 and 299 in the second and third rounds, respectively, to secure a ninth-place finish out of 11 teams, which is their best finish of the season.
“We drove the ball [at Erin Hills]. We had some above average iron play,” Porten said. We’re going to focus on the little things and do even better. … When we address things, they do better in those areas. We’re positive about it.”
Redshirt junior Nick Huggins is making his return to lineup after a poor outing at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational Sept. 29 caused him to miss the trip to Erin Hills. Porten said Huggins had a good week of practice and should give the Huskies a boost.
Denais, who finished Erin Hills with a 226, will be expected to get off to a hot start. Denais had been inconsistent early in the season, shooting over 80 in three rounds, but he seems to be turning things around.
The biggest problem for NIU has been its poor starts. At Erin Hills, the Huskies finished the first round tied for the ninth-worst score, 314, in the field, before finally righting the ship and shooting the second-best score in the second round.
“We’ve done some drills to try to get them in a round sooner,” Porten said. “They play them in their mind. We go through the routine of each hole, transitioning from each hole. It’s worked well, but it’s hard to get in that mindset. The challenge is to focus right away. Sometimes there’s nerves. We’re hoping drills and gaining experience will get them going early.”
Men’s golf won’t see action after the Sagamore Fall Preview until the Huskies travel to Texas for the Bayou City Collegiate Championship Feb. 20-22 in Humble, Texas.
