Voter registration ends Tuesday
October 5, 2014
Voting is a civic duty, and there is one day left to register to do so.
Tuesday marks the final day to register to vote in the Nov. 5 general election.
It also is the last day to update addresses on voter registration cards.
As of Friday, the number of registered voters in DeKalb County was at 47,680.
However, DeKalb County Clerk Sharon Holmes said that number is updated hourly.
Holmes, who also oversees voter registration in the county, said the number of voters is up from last year.
She attributed the increase in voters to a couple different sources.
“The referendum probably has a lot to do with it,” Holmes said.
The $39.8 million DeKalb school referendum is slated to appear on the Nov. 5 ballot.
She added that there has been more active campaigning by candidates, which seems to have attracted people to vote.
Students who wish to register in DeKalb County can go to the Student Association office, located at the Campus Life Building, Suite 180.
The Chicago Tribune recently reported that the lowest tier of registered voters, based on the 2000 election, is the 18- to 24-year-old group. Roughly 33 percent of people in that age group cast votes in the 2000 election.
In 2000, of the 111 million people who voted, 62 percent were white, non-Hispanic, which made up the largest portion of the electorate.
Holmes said there is no distinction made when tallying the DeKalb County voter numbers.
Other than the SA office, those wanting to vote in DeKalb County can register to vote at most area banks, city offices like the DeKalb Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St., the DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St. and village and township clerks offices.
In order to register to vote, one must provide two forms of identification. To vote in DeKalb County, one of the forms needs to have a DeKalb County address.
A voter must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen and have been living in his or her respective precinct for at least 30 days.
