Fire Prevention Week starts Oct. 5
September 22, 2014
Firefighters will visit grade schools and other community spots to teach fire safety and prevention Oct. 5-11 for Fire Prevention Week.
This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is smoke alarms. Firefighters will discuss the importance of having functional alarms at home and performing monthly tests.
“In a fire, seconds count,” said Assistant Fire Chief Art Zern, according to a Sycamore Fire Department news release. “Roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported … between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep. Home smoke alarms can alert people to a fire before it spreads, giving everyone enough time to get out.”
