Forte, Rodgers among best buy-low fantasy players

By Steve Shonder

Buying low is the greatest feeling in fantasy football, and it’s open season.

It’s Week 4, which means bye weeks are starting to roll through lineups and fantasy football owners are going to get a little desperate in the trade market. More importantly, panic mode is starting to set in. Someone’s first-round draft pick isn’t living up to that first-round hype. Offer up a Hail Mary trade. They might be desperate enough to accept.

My personal favorite buy-low candidate is Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte. He’s been beaten up in back-to-back weeks by some of the league’s best run defenses and hasn’t put up anywhere near the level of fantasy points you’d expect from him.

Now the schedule is starting to turn in his favor. This week, he faces the Green Bay front seven, which hasn’t stopped anyone. Then he’ll face Carolina, which is a challenge, but after that there’s no run defense that will cause him any problems.

Offering up a competent running back or a wide receiver should pry loose Forte.

Sticking with the NFC North, the best buy-low quarterbacks are Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers and Detroit’s Matthew Stafford. Both are having well-below-average seasons at the moment.

Rodgers is going to cost more simply because of name recognition, but his subpar start to the year may be enough to scare someone into moving him. Don’t mention to your potential trade partner that Rodgers won’t run into any challenging defense for the remainder of the season.

You’ll have to offer a considerable amount for Rodgers, say a good running back, like Le’Veon Bell, then a quarterback in the realm of Tony Romo, then a high-risk, high-reward guy like Cecil Shorts. If that sounds like too much to give up, go for Stafford.

There’s absolutely no way Stafford is going to continue to play like he has. Yes, he’ll throw a lot of interceptions, but that’s just a side effect of being in such a pass-heavy offense. Every time Stafford hooks up with Calvin Johnson it’s gold. Stafford will do this multiple times per game, usually in the red zone.

You should be able to get Stafford for a quality offensive player, maybe just one good player. If you’re really sneaky, you’ll offer up Kirk Cousins or Darren Sproles.

Torrey Smith is the best under-performing wide receiver in the game. He’s done absolutely nothing this season. Saying he’s under-performing is kind.

You could pry Smith free for almost anything. His fantasy points have been worse that dismal. Get him now.

Smith is going to go off one of these weeks. When he does, you’ll feel lots of shame for not believing in him. He’s one of the best deep-ball threats in the NFL. At some point his six receptions for 85 yards on 18 targets will turn into some monstrous point totals. He’s been targeted, but Joe Flacco’s deep ball just hasn’t found him yet.

By the way, Smith is in a contract year. He’s destined to explode. Get him for cheap before he returns to form.
