Top teams to face volleyball on road

Volleyball (4-3) will face off against some of the nation’s top teams this weekend when it travels to Morehead, Ky., for the Morehead State Invitational.

NIU will go against two teams that have gotten at least a few votes in the top 25 in the No. 15 Arizona State Sun Devils and the Louisville Cardinals, who appeared on 13 ballots last week. Head coach Ray Gooden said the home team, the Morehead State Eagles, cannot be counted out and will look for victories.

The Huskies take on Morehead State 9 a.m. Friday, Arizona State 4 p.m. Friday and Louisville 1 p.m. Saturday in Morehead, Ky.

“You [have] two teams going in that are ranked,” Gooden said. “Arizona State is ranked, Louisville has votes for top 25 and Morehead [State] is the home team, and they’re hungry for a win. So, every match has its own storyline, so we’re going to have to continue to play a solid level of volleyball to compete against these teams.”

NIU is coming off a Tuesday 3-0 sweep of the Northern Iowa Panthers, the team’s first win over the program in 11 tries.

NIU got out to an early lead against Northern Iowa after a 10-3 start and never looked back, winning (25-21, 26-24, 25-23).

The No. 15 Sun Devils (6-0) are on a six-game winning streak that includes four sweeps. ASU’s most recent 3-0 win was against the Hawkeyes on Sunday (25-21, 32-30, 25-23).

The home team Eagles (0-6) have struggled so far this season, only winning four of their 22 sets. Morehead State has some MAC play under its belt, as it played the MAC East’s Kent State on Friday in a nighttime loss to the Golden Flashes (25-20, 25-19, 25-18).

Louisville (3-3) will come in as the only .500 ballclub for the Morehead State Invitational. Like NIU, the Cardinals are coming off a Tuesday night game. Earlier this week they lost in four sets to the Kentucky Wildcats (25-20, 15-25, 25-21, 25-19).

“Any chance that we get to play we take it as an opportunity to really show people who we are and what NIU is all about,” said junior setter Alexis “Pookie” Gonzalez.
