Away game foods to chew over

By Matthew Soulis

Tailgating food isn’t too difficult to create, but what about away game foods?

These fun and bite-sized servings allow you to enjoy the game and socialize without a mouthful of food in the way. Plus, guests will have a free hand to hold their drink or give out high fives when the Huskies score a touchdown.

For this week’s meal, my beverages of choice include a glass of 2 percent milk, Bud Light or Barefoot Pinot Grigio. The flavors empower the subtle seasonings and barbecue sauce layered on the burger.

Bite-Sized Burgers

What you will need:

• Frying pan or grill

• Spatula

• Hamburger buns

• 2 pounds thawed ground beef

• 1 slice American cheese per burger

• 2 yellow onions

• 1 pound bacon

• 3 tablespoons Lawry’s Seasoned Salt

• 2 tablespoons garlic powder

• 1 tablespoons onion powder

• 1 whole egg

• Jack Daniel’s Barbecue Sauce

What to do:

1. Using your hands, combine the thawed ground beef and the whole egg in a large bowl.

2. Once the egg is properly distributed among the ground beef, add the garlic powder, onion powder and Lawry’s.

3. Follow your preferred method for cooking the bacon. For those with trouble cooking bacon, I recommend the following:

a. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

b. Place the bacon evenly in a single layer on a baking sheet.

c. Place bacon in the oven for 10–15 minutes based on how you prefer your bacon to be cooked.

4. Once you have set the bacon to cook, separate the patties into 1/8-pound to 1/4-pound patties based on the number of guests you will be entertaining.

5. Heat the frying pan to medium-high heat or preheat the grill to 325–375 degrees.

6. Place the patties on your heated platform (frying pan or grill).

7. Remember to flip the patties every 6-8 minutes until the proper texture is acquired (medium rare burgers usually take four to six flips, so plan accordingly).

8. While the burgers are cooking, slice the onions thinly into roughly 1/4-inch slices. Store them for later.

9. Remove patties and place them on hamburger buns. Add cheese for those who prefer it.

10. Add bacon and onion slices for those who prefer it.

11. Finally add the Jack Daniels sauce and serve.

Sleeping Teddy Bear Shooters

What you will need:

• 8-ounce glass or plastic cup

• 2-ounce shooter shot glass

• 1/2 ounce blue KINKY Liqueur

• 1/2 ounce Pearl Blueberry Vodka (per gummy bear)

• 1 can of Arizona Watermelon

• Rose’s Grenadine (just a splash)

• 1 bag of Haribo Gummi Bears

What to do:

1. Pour the desired number of gummy bears (one per shot) into the cup or glass.

2. Add 1/2 ounce of Pearl Vodka per gummy bear.

3. Let the gummy bears sit for at least one hour. Caution: If sitting for more than four hours, the candy will become soft, mushy and intolerable for the shot.

4. After the gummy bears have been sitting for at least one hour, add just a splash of grenadine to the bottom of the shooter shot glass.

5. Add one gummy bear to the shot glass.

6. Add the KINKY liqueur to the shot glass.

7. Pour the Arizona Watermelon into the shot glass until it fills the cup.

8. Remind your guest of the gummy bear so they don’t choke.
