Comic Club turns on bat signal for ‘Gotham’
September 17, 2014
Batman fans can watch the premiere of TV show “Gotham” with the Comic Book Club 6:30 p.m. Monday at New Game in Town, 811 W. Lincoln Highway.
The watch party will include food, drinks and comic-book related activities, including trivia. Alex Hedlund, Comic Book Club president and senior marketing major, said this is not the club’s first TV show premiere event.
“We did something with both ‘Arrow’ and ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,’” Hedlund said. “We had fun with those. We did the same thing with pizza and pop and that kind of stuff.”
The club added a creative spin on other comic events, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pizza parties.
“We started that like two years ago… . We went to Pizza Villa and we bought pizzas and just put the craziest things on our pizzas,” Hedlund said. “People brought whipped cream, chocolate [and] candy … whoever had the most ridiculous stuff and ate it, they usually got a prize. We also have trivia on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and give out TMNT prizes.”
Other Comic Book Club events, such as contests, allow members to bring out their inner superhero.
“… The one [event] where we created our own comic book hero and had a contest … that was a lot of fun,” said Jacqueline Robertson, sophomore communication major and Comic Book Club member. “Basically, you got into groups and you created a design for a comic book hero. And then you had to come up with a backstory, characteristics, superpowers, supervillains … .”
The club encourages anyone interested in comics to come to the “Gotham” event and any of its weekly meetings 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays at New Game in Town.
“If you have an interest in comic books or culture … and you’re just looking for more like-minded people to hang out with to discuss these things … if you wanna geek out, then come join us,” said Ai Lambogo, senior mechanical engineering major and Comic Book Club member. “We’re here every Wednesday. It’s very informal.”
