A woman used red paint to vandalize trees and cement in the Martin Luther King Jr. Commons Friday, according to witnesses.

Two witnesses, who did not wish to be identified, said they saw the woman shouting at passersby about students wasting their time in school in the commons Tuesday. The woman returned with red paint that she smeared on trees and cement, telling onlookers it was part of a “public demonstration,” Friday afternoon, the witnesses said.

At least two trees had paint on them and a small can of red paint was left in a pool of paint on the cement. Red paint was also smeared in zig-zag lines in another spot in the commons.

The paint on the cement has been washed away and paint on the trees has been covered up.

During the second episode, the woman broke sticks off the commons’ trees, shouted at students about the United States bombing Syria and lunged at a student with a stick, the witnesses said. Witnesses said the woman fled when one of the witnesses contacted police.

Officers at the scene declined to comment and an NIU police representative could not be reached for comment.
