Men’s soccer out to conquer California
September 3, 2014
Men’s soccer (1-0-1) will continue its season-opening road trip with another pair of matches this weekend in California. The Huskies will take on the Cal Poly Mustangs (1-1) 9 p.m. Friday in San Luis Obispo, Calif., and will then square off with the Santa Clara Broncos (1-1) 2 p.m. Sunday in Santa Clara, Calif.
The Huskies will attempt to keep their undefeated record alive after playing to a scoreless draw against Hofstra (0-1-1) and taking a 3-0 victory over Quinnipiac (0-2) last weekend.
The Mustangs have had a total of six goals in two contests, one of which was a 4-3 loss to Davidson (1-0-1) and the other a 3-1 victory over North Carolina State (0-1-1). Possibly the biggest threat to the Huskies against Cal Poly Friday is junior winger Chase Minter, who has put away three goals and one assist in two games. The Huskies will also keep in mind that the Mustangs have allowed five goals in their first two games.
“They’re a good team,” said head coach Eric Luzzi. “They’re pretty explosive offensively. They score a lot of goals, especially in their first couple of games. We are going to have to be good defensively, but we also know that they leave themselves exposed to some things, as well. So there will be chances for us to open them up, but we will have to be good on both sides of the ball for sure.”
The Broncos have scored three goals in the past two games, as have the Huskies. In their first match they picked up a 3-2 win over the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks (1-1), but they were then shut out by Creighton Bluejays (2-0) with a final score of 1-0.
The Broncos “are very much the opposite from [Cal] Poly,” Luzzi said. “They are very physical, very direct and they will be a tough team to play. These will be two good games for sure. [They have] two very opposite styles, but for right now we are honestly only focused on Friday. We will worry about Sunday’s game after Friday’s game is over.”
Following the road trip, the Huskies come back home for the first time this season, but they know they need to take care of business on the road first.
“Our guys are very self-motivated,” Luzzi said. “We know that every game is a big deal. Our guys know that every game matters. Our captains have been doing a great job and our guys are coming out and working very hard every day in training to make sure we are putting ourselves in the best spot to get results every time we play.”
