Arkansas puts end to football streaks
September 21, 2014
Football’s 26-game regular season winning streak and 17-game road winning streak came to a halt at the hands of the Arkansas Razorbacks Saturday.
The Huskies (3-0) were beaten by the Razorbacks (3-1), 52-14, at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville, Ark.
After a 97-yard opening kickoff return from Arkansas’ Korliss Marshall, the Huskies couldn’t get their offense going. On the Huskies’ second possession of the game, redshirt sophomore quarterback Drew Hare fumbled on their own 14-yard line, and the Razorbacks returned the ball for a touchdown, putting them up 14-0. There was nothing the Huskies could do after that to stop the bleeding.
The Razorbacks went on to win the rest of the half, 28-7.
“Give Arkansas a lot of credit,” said head coach Rod Carey at a news conference broadcast on NIUTube. “They are a good team. … They came out and made plays and we didn’t.”
Hare finished the night completing 18 of 29 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns. Hare connected with wide receiver Aregeros Turner and tailback Joel Bouagnon for his pair of touchdowns.
The Huskies’ defense didn’t have an answer for Arkansas’ run game, allowing 212 rushing yards and three touchdowns to slip past. Arkansas came in ranked second nationally with 362 yards per game.
The Huskies’ own run game, which came in ranked seventh nationally (325.3 yards per game), was held to only 123 yards by the Razorbacks’ defense.
Carey said he was mostly disappointed with the Huskies’ nine penalties for 67 yards.
“We gotta clean that up,” Carey said at a news conference broadcast on NIUTube.
Arkansas scored on eight of 11 drives, including a 44-yard touchdown pass with 9:56 left in the fourth to put the Razorbacks up 45-14.
“We will look at film and try to fix some things,” Carey said at a news conference broadcast on NIUTube. “Arkansas is a good football team and we give them a lot of credit.”
The Huskies now have a chance to lick their wounds as they enter a bye week and prepare for Kent State Oct. 4. Kent State is NIU’s first conference opponent of the season.
