Football remains without starting QB

Football head coach Rod Carey isn’t committing himself to one quarterback — yet.

The Huskies have been attempting to find former quarterback Jordan Lynch’s successor since the start of spring camp; however, no quarterback — of junior Matt McIntosh and sophomores Drew Hare and Anthony Maddie — has emerged from the pack with the Presbyterian Blue Hose coming to town Thursday.

“Are we getting to a point where we could play more than one? Probably, because of how they’ve performed, not so much that we can’t decide on a guy,” Carey said. “It’s more based on their performance. [That’s] if we go down that road. … It’s a good problem to have because we have three guys that are playing pretty well.”

While the competition has carried over from spring camp to fall camp and now to the first week of game practice, Carey said he didn’t expect the race to be so close.

“I expected somebody at some point to separate and really kind of take hold of this thing, not only schematically and decision making-wise but leadership-wise,” Carey said. “And that’s probably where I’m most pleased with all three of them is that no doubt they all improved schematically and decision making-wise, but leadership-wise, they all three have led, and that’s a testament to how tight that group is. Not only that quarterback group, but that offense. They really understand each other and like each other.”

As for the rest of the offense, senior wide receiver Da’Ron Brown and senior offensive lineman Ryan Brown haven’t noticed too many differences when each quarterback takes the field.

“It would take time to get used to them, but that was the point of the summer and the offseason,” Da’Ron Brown said. “Using that time wisely was what helped us get used to the quarterbacks. Now, whoever’s in we’re going to be all comfortable with each other.”

Da’Ron Brown said there’s minor difference with release and aiming points, and Ryan Brown said there’s little difference in the cadence of a call, but it’s nothing they can’t handle.

Carey said the three quarterbacks have continued to progress, which makes the coaching staff’s decision about choosing a starter a tough one, but he’s “getting closer” to naming one guy.

“It’s a good problem to have,” Carey said. “But nonetheless, a good problem or a bad problem is still a problem. It’s still something that we’re getting through.

“Here’s my expectations. My expectations are really easy for the quarterbacks, and I’ve laid this out; I don’t care who’s in there. They’ve all performed at such a high level that I expect that person that’s in there to play well. They’ve proven that they can do that right now. As we get closer to it, we’ll let them know.”
