Track headed to 3 meets
April 23, 2014
Track and field will look to build on its spring success during its second-to-last tuneup before the MAC Championships.
The Huskies will compete at the Penn Relays today to Saturday in Philadelphia while also sending runners to the Hillsdale GINA Relays today in Hillsdale, Mich. They will also compete at the Lions Invitational Saturday in Ewing, N.J.
Head coach Connie Teaberry said the Huskies did a good job preparing for the meets.
“The girls are starting to sharpen up,” Teaberry said. “[They are] starting to get confidence off that nine-win performance at DePaul, so I think that we are carrying that atmosphere, that work ethic over into Penn Relays, Hillsdale, as well as Lions Invitational.”
The weekend will be highlighted by the 120th annual Penn Relays, which started Tuesday with the men’s decathlon and the women’s heptathlon. The Huskies got a third-place finish from freshman Logan Tillmon’s 4,465 points and a second-place finish from freshman Claudette Day’s 4,829 points. Day’s point total broke her own record for the event from earlier this year.
The Huskies will be up against a tough field of competition, including 14 teams ranked in the top 25 nationally and six schools ranked in the top 10.
“The team is privileged to attend the Penn Relays this week,” Teaberry said, according to a news release. “The competition is always stellar and the meet management is one of the best. Our athletes will once again have the opportunity to go toe to toe with the best in their respective events.
“Many of the teams competing are national caliber and so are we. This is definitely the type of competition they need to see to prepare for the MAC Championships.”
With just three weeks until NIU will head to Athens, Ohio, for the Outdoor MAC Championships, Teaberry said she hopes the good marks continue for the Huskies.
NIU is coming off a successful campaign at the Blue Demon Invitational where it claimed nine event titles, two Mid-American Conference automatic bids and a school record in the high jump.
