Men’s basketball’s Montgomery gets contract extension

NIU extended men’s basketball head coach Mark Montgomery’s contract by two years, Athletic Director Sean Frazier announced Friday. Montgomery’s contract will run through the 2017-18 season.

Montgomery guided the Huskies to a 15-17 overall record and an 8-11 MAC record during the 2013-14 season, his third season with NIU. He finished second in MAC Coach of the Year voting.

The Huskies garnered the No. 7 seed in the MAC Tournament and defeated Bowling Green in the first round before falling to Eastern Michigan in the second round.

In Montgomery’s first two seasons at the helm, the Huskies won a combined 10 games, picking up five wins each season.

Montgomery will have the majority of his roster returning for the 2014-15 season.

The Huskies lost guard Antone Christian and wing Aksel Bolin to graduation. They also lost sophomore guards Daveon Balls and J.J. Cravatta, who will transfer from NIU.

The Huskies will gain guard Michael Orris, a Kansas State transfer, and guard Anthony Johnson, a Purdue transfer. Orris and Johnson were with the Huskies last season but sat out after transferring to NIU.
