The NIU Self-ie-Perspective Facebook event, which had more than 350 posts to the wall by the organizers’ Friday deadline, has had a remarkable effect on the student body.

Zachery Cramer, freshman business management major, and sophomore psychology major Kalenna Kaske started the project thinking it would get people out of their shells and realizing it’s OK to like themselves. This is a huge step for students to connect with others and to have confidence in themselves. Students were asked to take a selfie showing an insecurity they have and then upload the photo to the Self-ie-Perspective event page. The pictures will be printed out for the Self-ie-Perspective event 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Neptune Central. The event will continue with participants putting Post-its with positive feedback on the photos.

It takes a tremendous amount of courage to talk about one’s insecurities, and to post those insecurities for hundreds of students to see is inspiring. With all the negativity in the world, the Editorial Board is glad to see the love and respect in every comment posted on that page.

Sophomore sociology major Logan Clark posted his story about coming out and being transgender on the page. His post has received more than 1,000 likes.

“I think my story was so popular because I have a very unique situation,” Clark said. “Being transgender is quite a journey, and not many people have met someone dealing with my situation.”

According to the NIU Self-ie Perspective Facebook event, more than 700 students have RSVP’d to attend the event. The Editorial Board is excited to see how the event will turn out and how much positivity and self confidence will come from it.
