Softball comes closer to home

Softball will host Northwestern today, but it will have to wait to host its first true home game.

The Huskies (10-12) will face the Northwestern Wildcats (17-6) 2 p.m. today at the Ballpark at Rosemont. The game was scheduled to be played at NIU, but it was moved to Rosemont “due to the extended winter in the Midwest,” according to a news release.

The Wildcats have gone 7-2 in March. Their two losses came by a combined three runs.

On the season, the Wildcats have averaged 6.96 runs per game. They have allowed an average of 3.57 runs per game.

“They can turn a one-run inning into a five-run inning quickly,” said head coach Christina Sutcliffe. “We need to get outs and get off the field without giving them extra outs. Offensively, we need to stay calm in the box and stay concentrated. If we do that, the better off we’ll be.”

Northwestern has seven batters hitting .311 or better. Senior Marisa Bast leads the team in batting average (.397), home runs (four) and RBIs (30).

The Wildcats played two games Friday and one game Saturday at the Ballpark at Rosemont vs. Wisconsin, going 2-1.

“They may be more familiar with warm-ups and that kind of stuff,” Sutcliffe said. “It plays a lot like the Chessick [Practice Center], so it won’t be that different for us. It does play big with a lot of triples, so I think it’s going to be a bit of a different atmosphere. Playing Northwestern will have us pumped up.”

The Huskies are coming off a Sunday doubleheader split against Iowa State in Ames, Iowa. They won the opener, 15-6, in five innings before dropping the second game, 6-5, in eight innings.

Among the standouts were senior shortstop Shelby Miller, sophomore catcher Emily Naegele and junior pitcher Jessica Sturm.

Miller was named MAC West Player of the Week for her performance in the two Sunday games. She went 5-6 with three runs scored and two RBIs in the doubleheader.

Naegele went 5-8 with two runs and four RBIs.

Sturm went 4-7 at the plate with two runs and five RBIs. In the circle, Sturm picked up the win in the first game and then took the loss, in relief, in the second game.

On the season, the Huskies have averaged 4.59 runs per game. They have allowed an average of 4.68 runs per game.

“We’ve had pretty good pitching as of late,” Sutcliffe said. “We’ve been solid with our production. We would like to stay with the success we’ve had at the plate, and we just need to keep doing what we do at the plate.”

Sutcliffe said the coaching staff hasn’t yet decided who will start in the circle for the Huskies.
