Wrestling ends losing streak
February 23, 2014
Wrestling won its final dual of the regular season Sunday with a 20-14 victory over Buffalo.
The Huskies (7-11, 2-6 MAC) started slow as they trailed Buffalo (3-18, 0-8 MAC) by a score of 11-0 after the first three matches, before rallying and winning the next four to take a 14-11 lead.
The Huskies’ lead did not last as redshirt junior Caleb Busson (184) fell to the Bulls’ Tony Lock. With the match tied at 14, redshirt freshman Shawn Scott (197) was able to get a victory when he beat Angelo Malvestuto.
Redshirt senior Jared Torrence (285) finished off the victory for the Huskies as he continued his impressive season with a 7-4 win over James Benjamin.
Head coach Ryan Ludwig said he was proud of how his guys responded after the slow start, and felt they really battled and fought back for a gritty victory.
“We had a rough start, lost out of the gate at three weights, but we’re able to get back on track at 149 with Rob Jillard,” Ludwig said. “Andrew Morse also wrestled really well today. Andrew was able to get some takedowns and ride it out to get us on track.”
Momentum really swung for the Huskies when redshirt freshman Billy Chancey won at 174. Ludwig said Chancey’s win was huge for the Huskies and really swung momentum in the Huskies’ favor.
“I think the unsung hero of the day was Billy Chancey grinding out a win at 174. That was a huge swing match and Billy was able to grind that win out and it was a very big win for us to help win the dual,” Ludwig said.
Ludwig said the team is confident and peaking at the right time, with MAC tournament play coming up.
“I think some of our individuals are peaking at the right time. Shawn Scott put together a dominating victory today over Angelo Malvestuto, who’s got some very big wins himself. And Jared Torrence continues to perform well in the MAC duals as well.”
The Huskies will look to build some momentum off of the win as they head into MAC tournament play, which begins March 8 in Kent, Ohio.
“It’s nice to enter the MAC tournament with a win under your belt,” Ludwig said. “We’ve still got a lot to work on however, and we’ll get back to the drawing board to fix some things and try and peak at the right time. It’s good to go in there with a head of steam and some momentum. It’s always nice when we can come together and get a dual meet win.”
