Northern Nights: Local venues showcase music
February 23, 2014
Rosy’s Roadhouse
Rosy’s Roadhouse is a great place to hear any kind of music you can imagine.
Rosy’s Roadhouse, 930 Pappas Drive, wants all kinds of bands or DJ’s to perform and entertain the crowd. With different genres from rock to EDM you can go there every night and not hear the same thing twice.
Co-owner Joe Chavez said students should go to Rosy’s to hear all of what talent that DeKalb has.
“The music scene is really growing,” Chavez said. “It’s really a growing market, and we are trying to find new local bands for students to listen to.”
The bar is separated into two sections: one for eating and sitting and another side for a dance floor with lights and Co2 cannons that make everyone dance.
Fatty’s Pub & Grille
For a more laid-back scene, Fatty’s Pub & Grille, 1312 W. Lincoln Highway, is the perfect choice. Though Fatty’s has a full menu and themed nights where attendees can play trivia or watch hockey, the best nights are still when the restaurant has a local band rocking their stage. The bands that perform get the crowd into their set, and everyone has a good time.
On Monday nights Fatty’s has acoustic nights where there is also an open mic. This is the place to go if you want to try out your newest song. Manager Cara Billuni said the live music always brings in a lot of students.
“The live music always has a great atmosphere and gives the performers the opportunity to showcase their talents,” Billuni said.
Convocation Center
When popular artists come to town the place they tend to go is the Convocation Center, 1525 W. Lincoln Highway.
The Convo has 10,000 seats that are filled with all kinds of fans. The Convo not only hosts concerts, but is also where the Huskies play basketball, volleyball, gymnastics and more.
The Convo also hosts the Full-time Job Fair and Internship Fair each semester to help students.
Northern Star
During the week the staff of the Northern Star does all the work for you in finding out where the next local performance is going to be, and saying what students should be listening to.
Staff members search DeKalb for up and coming bands that will be playing at the local venues we all know and love. When the staff is discussing what events to cover, music is always a topic we love to write about.
“One of the most interesting aspects of DeKalb’s music is its diversity,” said Scene writer Carl Nadig. “It provides students a window to observe their environment from different perspectives. Go to any open mic night and you’ll discover your community.”
