Pass/fail: TRiO Day helps out students, Commuters had to miss classes

By Shaz Sheikhali

Pass:

National TRiO Day is a day set out to help first-generation college students.

Universities from all over the state are coming together to attend National TRiO Day.

Students will participate in programs created to help them develop their education and leadership skills.

First-generation students are inspirational people who need acknowledgement and assistance. It is about time first-generation students are acknowledged.

National TRiO Day is a magnificent step toward a brighter future.

Way to go NIU for not only being a part of such an event but for hosting it.

I am excited for first-generation students and I wish them luck.

NIU will host the event from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Holmes Student Center.

Fail:

Commuter students missed out on class time due to the administration’s lack of action Monday.

Classes were still in session even after an ambiguous NIU advisory urged student to “stay put” Monday.

Classes should have been canceled. Commuter students missing class because of poor driving conditions due to the weather is not fair. Those students missed valuable class lectures and it was not their fault. It was not safe for them to go to NIU.

This is a lesson the NIU administration should take note of: If the weather conditions are bad for driving then you should cancel classes.

Commuter students should not have missed out on valuable sessions, especially when they are paying for their education.
