Gymnastics fails to beat Kent State
February 9, 2014
Gymnastics put up its highest score of the season Friday, but it wasn’t enough to knock off No. 25 Kent State.
The Huskies (2-2, 2-1 MAC) lost 195.675-193.375 at Kent State. The loss ends the Huskies’ three-meet win streak. The Golden Flashes (6-1, 3-0 MAC) swept all four events, marking the second time this season NIU failed to win any events in a meet.
This was the first meet where NIU scored 48 and higher on all four events.
Head coach Sam Morreale said NIU is on the right track.
“I was pleased with the progress they showed,” Morreale said. “We’re still chasing a hit-everything meet. We feel we can still do better.”
On vault, sophomore Jaelyn Olsen placed second with a 9.825. Kent State’s Marie Case and Amiah Mims tied for first with a 9.85. NIU junior Kelly Nortz continued her strong work from last week with a 9.75, while senior Kim Gotlund earned a 9.725. Kent State outscored the Huskies 48.825-48.3.
NIU put up a 48.275 on bars, which was its lowest score of the night. Gotlund led the team with a 9.7. Sophomore Natalie Amadio had the second-highest score for the Huskies with a 9.675.
Kent State took the top spots in the event: Jaymi Baxter led everyone with a 9.85, while Rebecca Osmer had a 9.825. The Golden Flashes finished bars with a 48.825.
The Huskies built on their strong beam work from the meet against Western Michigan Feb. 3. Senior Natasha Jufko tied for first — and tied her career best — with a 9.85.
Gotlund placed third with a 9.75. The Golden Flashes’ Case tied Jufko for first with a 9.85. Kent State won the event 48.9-48.375.
Junior Amanda Stepp scored 9.825 in her first appearance on floor exercises since the meet against Ball State Jan. 24. Stepp placed third in the event.
Gotlund and junior Shelby Davis continued their strong performances on floor with a 9.75 and a 9.675, respectively.
Kent State’s Mims led everyone with a 9.9. In second place, Case and Jordan Hardison tied with a score of 9.85. The Huskies were outscored 49.125-48.425.
In the all-around, Kent State’s Case earned a 39.3, which is the second-best score she has put up all season and is the second-highest all-around score in the conference this season.
Gotlund scored a 38.925, her highest all-around score of the year and the fourth-highest all-around score in the MAC this season.
Morreale said the Huskies can build off this performance and it shows they’re capable of more.
“We can definitely come out and score higher,” Morreale said. “We can build from this. We [get] confidence in competition and in practice.”
