Gymnastics aiming for ‘194’ score next meet

By Steve Shonder

Gymnastics is set to defend its undefeated home record against two opponents.

The Huskies (2-2, 2-1 MAC) will take on the Iowa State Cyclones (2-4) and the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers (3-2) in a triangular meet 1 p.m. Sunday at the Convocation Center.

NIU is looking to rebound from a 195.675-193.375 loss to No. 25 Kent State. The 193.375 was NIU’s highest team score this season. Junior Amanda Stepp said the team’s score will ratchet up the intensity as it tries to reach 194.

“We were right there,” Stepp said. “If we can hit 24 for 24, we can definitely go 194, probably higher. … Everybody is really pushing for that because we’re right there and it’s within reach.”

The Huskies have been a strong home team recently. They are 6-1 at home in the last two seasons and 2-0 at home this year.

Iowa State is coming off a 196.025-194.175 win over West Virginia. The score was its highest since the 2011 season.

Head coach Sam Morreale said Iowa State is going to be one of the better opponents NIU will face this year, given there isn’t any event — of the four — in which Iowa State struggles.

“They’re a class team,” Morreale said. “They’re really clean and sharp with their lines and how they do things. Their floor routines are really pretty to watch.”

The Cyclones are led by Caitlin Brown, who had a 39.275 all-around score against West Virginia. In addition to Brown, Camille Santerre-Gervais has been a big contributor. Santerre-Gervais set a school record on bars with a 9.95 against WVU.

Texas Woman’s has been hit or miss for much of the year. After starting the season with a 189.825 in a loss to the Auburn Tigers, it scored a 194.250 against Air Force for its season high. Since then, it has hovered in between scores of 192 and 193.

Morreale said the Pioneers compete at the Huskies’ skill level.

“They’re kind of in our wheelhouse,” Morreale said. “If they were in the MAC, it’d be a good place for them to be. We’re going to have to have a good meet to beat them. They’re solid on all four events. It’s not a meet we can just take for granted.”

Texas Woman’s best work has come on bars. In its last meet, Brittainy Johnson led the team with a 9.825, while Bethany Larimer put up a 9.775.

The Pioneers’ poor work on vault gives the Huskies a slight edge, but Larimer could give NIU some problems. She scored a 9.825 in the Pioneers’ meet against Lindenwood and Centenary.
