Threloff leads men’s basketball to exhibition win
November 3, 2013
In its lone exhibition game of the season, men’s basketball looked sharp as it took down Rockford University, 90-57, Sunday at the Convocation Center.
NIU got contributions from a number of players, as five Huskies scored in double figures. The Huskies were led by redshirt junior center Jordan Threloff, who scored a game-high 17 points. The DeKalb native added seven rebounds in his effort off the bench.
Sophomore wing Darrell Bowie, sophomore guard Daveon Balls and junior center Pete Rakocevic each scored 11 points in the contest, while freshman guard Dontel Highsmith added 10 points of his own. The Huskies shot 53.3 percent from the field in the game.
“What I liked about our team is that we had five guys in double figures, and J.J. Cravatta had nine, so almost six guys,” said coach Mark Montgomery in a news release. “For us to be a good team we are going to need multiple guys scoring in double figures.”
The Huskies came out of the gates with a lot of energy, as they quickly found themselves leading the Regents 13-0 in the first five minutes. Bowie and Balls each scored five points while senior forward Aksel Bolin drained a three-point field goal for 13 unanswered points. The Regents didn’t get on the scoreboard until senior guard Scott Suchy hit a three-pointer with 13:40 left to play in the first half.
“I thought we got off to a great start,” Montgomery said in a news release. “We started off with a 10-0 run, but then we were sleepwalking the rest of the first half. We woke them back up at halftime and outscored them 52-33 in the second half.”
With the Huskies leading 23-5, the Regents went on a 14-3 run of their own to cut the NIU lead to seven, 26-19 with 5:43 left in the first half. The Huskies went into the half with a 38-24 lead.
In the second half, the Huskies used a 15-0 run to pull away and increase their lead, 68-42. The Regents were led offensively by senior forward David Dixon, who poured in 15 points while shooting 7 of 15 from the field.
The Huskies’ season will begin when they host Nebraska Omaha at 7 p.m. Friday at the Convocation Center for their regular season.
