Head coach Bennett to face old team, Wisconsin
November 13, 2013
After earning its first victory of the season Tuesday at home, women’s basketball (1-1) heads right back out on the road — but not until it has time to rest.
The Huskies will square off with the Wisconsin Badgers (1-0), their only Big Ten opponent this season, at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis.
NIU opened its 2013-14 season with a 78-44 loss Friday on the road against the Green Bay Phoenix, but responded Tuesday in its home opener with a 79-60 win over the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devilettes.
The Huskies will have four days to prepare for the Wisconsin Badgers, and head coach Kathi Bennett, who was an assistant coach at Wisconsin for two seasons before becoming the NIU head coach in the 2010-11 season, said it will be another good test for the Huskies.
“Well, it’s my scout, so I can’t wait to prepare,” Bennett said. “I like the time to get us ready. Wisconsin’s a very good team. They’re a veteran team. … They have great size. For us it’s an awesome challenge to go in there and just play without fear and just go after it.”
Through two games, junior guard Amanda Corral leads the team in scoring (13.0) and steals (1.5), is tied for the lead in blocks (0.5) and is second in rebounds (5.5) and assists (2.5).
Junior forward Natecia Augusta, who recorded her first career double-double against the Devilettes, leads the team in rebounds (6.5) and is second on the team in scoring (10.5).
While the Huskies will have extra preparation time for Wisconsin, the Badgers can’t look ahead to the Huskies because they still have another game on their schedule: 7 p.m. today on the road against Milwaukee.
The Badgers won their only game so far this season, posting a 66-41 over the Drake Bulldogs Sunday at home. In their lone victory, the Badgers had three starters stand out: Fifth-year senior guard Taylor Wurtz, redshirt junior forward Michala Johnson and sophomore guard Dakota Whyte. The trio combined for 47 of the Badgers’ 66 points.
Wurtz, who sat out last season with a medical redshirt due to a lingering back injury, grabbed seven rebounds and posted 13 points, including her 1,000th career point, in her first game back.
Johnson, who sat out last year due to NCAA transfer rules after she transferred from the University of Connecticut, recorded a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds, including seven offensive boards.
Whyte, who played in 28 games last season as a true freshman and averaged 2.4 points per game, led the team with 18 points in the season opener.
