Mens soccer falls in MAC opener
October 6, 2013
In its first conference game of the season, the men’s soccer team suffered its worst loss of the year: a 4-0 defeat to West Virginia.
From the start the Huskies (3-7-0, 0-1-0 MAC) were on the back foot as the Mountaineers (4-5-1, 1-1-0 MAC) struck in the 10th minute. NIU let in another goal off of a set piece as Christian Diaz scored a goal off of a short corner kick.
West Virginia added two more in the next 10 minutes with goals from Andy Bevin and Jamie Merriam to make the score 3-0 before the 20-minute mark.
The final goal was scored in the last five minutes of the game as Ryan Cain put an emphasis on the win with a breakaway goal.
This was the first time the Huskies allowed four goals in a match and the first time the team allowed more than two goals scored in regular time.
NIU took just eight shots in the match while West Virginia had 21 in the 90 minutes.
