‘Arkham Orgins’ lives up to legend

The world’s greatest detective is on the hunt in Warner Bros’ new Batman adventure.
Released Friday, “Batman: Arkham Origins” is the new prequel game in the Arkham series. Players explore the beginning of Bruce Wayne’s transition into Batman. Despite the game lacking its original developers and creators, it still packs quite a punch.
Jumping into the world of Batman, I enjoyed the beautiful graphics and environments. The cinematic cutscenes in the Arkham series have always been some of the greatest in gaming. The scenes are cut smoothly together and are one of the main reasons I enjoy the Arkham series.
Going into the actual gameplay, there is a noticeable drop in graphics quality. It is not unexpected with these developers, but is still disappointing. In the wake of next-generation graphics and games like “Beyond: Two Souls,” I wanted more. Still, the graphics are good during the gameplay and do not draw away from the experience.
Gameplay has always been strong in Batman video games. There is nothing better to me than donning the cape and cowl. “Origins’” combat system follows closely the other games in the series. The fluid fighting seems to be a staple of the Batman video games but makes me feel a bit sick when the camera gets lost.
Quick-time events have become more woven into the game combat. I know quick-time events are a debated mechanic in hardcore gaming circles, but “Batman: Arkham Origins” seems to do them right.
The events don’t take away from the fighting and aren’t unexpected or tedious. The quick-time events add more kinetic gameplay, which makes me feel more involved in the action. They raise the tension in the fighting and make for a more interactive cinematic experience.
A change of voice actors was surprising, but it doesn’t let me down. The classic voices of Kevin Conroy’s Batman and Mark Hamill’s Joker don’t make an appearance, but Roger Craig Smith and Troy Baker carry their torch in grand gestures. Baker does a near-lawless Hamill-inspired Joker voice.
The sights and sounds of “Batman: Arkham Origins” leave this game as another classic in the Batman universe.
