Jersey Mike’s partners with fire department

Jersey Mike’s, 103 N. Annie Glidden Road, held its grand opening Monday and celebrated by giving away sandwiches to customers. “I’m excited for the grand opening…,” said employee Tim Bretz. “This is the only Jersey Mike’s in the area and we expect a ton of people to come in.”

One of the ways Jersey Mike’s Subs is attempting to get out word of its Wednesday opening is with a fundraiser that will benefit the DeKalb Fire Department.

In order to accomplish this, the East Coast sandwich franchise, which is opening at 103 N. Annie Glidden Road, will circulate 10,000 coupons throughout the community. These coupons will offer a free regular sub for a minimum $1 contribution to the DeKalb Fire Department.

“We wanted to let students know that by buying our sandwiches and coming to our opening they are giving back to their own community,” said franchise owner Todd Shaw. “With our fundraiser, people can support their local fire department.”

Jersey Mike’s has used the opening of franchises to help others in the past. Junior nursing major Barbie Podraza said Jersey Mike’s held a similar fundraiser when it opened in her hometown.

“Jersey Mike’s did a $1 donation fundraiser that benefited my high school,” Podraza said. “I think the donation’s a good idea because the word will spread, and I know that in my hometown everyone went there after the fundraiser.”

While Podraza was familiar with Jersey Mike’s fundraising events, freshman undecided major Kayti Grable didn’t know much about the opening.

“I only found out about it because a girl in my class is working there,” Grable said. “I’ve been there before but I wasn’t really planning on going.”

Jersey Mike’s Subs will host its grand opening and fundraiser from Wednesday to Sunday.
