Garage-rock duo enters the House
September 18, 2013
Most concerts in DeKalb do not include selling men’s underwear. That’s not the case for White Mystery’s upcoming show at the House Cafe, 263 E. Lincoln Highway.
The band is compromised of Chicago sibling-garage duo Miss Alex White and Francis Scott Key White.
“We’re really excited about playing DeKalb,” said Alex White. “And we’re grateful for the opportunity to party with all of you and see what your local bands are like.”
Northern Star: White Mystery played at Riot Fest Sunday alongside various bands, including The Replacements, Blondie, Blink-182 and Fall Out Boy. What was that like?
Alex White: We played for a crowd of over 10,000 people. Before that, we played in Minneapolis with Patti Smith on the Station to Station tour…that kind of variety makes it exciting. One thing that’s cool when you play these festivals…having that experience watching these legendary bands just a couple of feet away from you.
NS: Earlier this year, Esquire magazine wrote that White Mystery’s tour history has “one of the most hectic live performance schedules of any band working.” You’ve played in almost every major city in the United States, from Chicago, to Portland, to Austin and Washington D.C.
White: Twice this year.
NS: Your history shows you’ve been on tour since 2010. What’s it like to constantly be on tour?
White: It’s great. Meeting people on the way is one of the biggest pleasures of playing music…. It’s cool to have an international community as far west as San Francisco and as far east as the Czech Republic.
NS: What are you doing when you’re not on tour?
White: I’m booking the shows and licensing our music to MTV. Making merchandise for the band. On Saturday in DeKalb we’ll have socks, underwear — like men’s underwear [laughs] — vinyl, cassettes; a variety of merchandise. And writing music, of course. I spend my time being productive and trying to contribute to the greater good with our music.
NS: I saw you played a charity show for children.
White: Yeah! That was Chic-a-Go-Go.
NS: Your latest LP, Telepathic, was released this year on April 20 and it’s been getting a lot of attention lately, including a music video uploaded to Pitchfork.com. Are you planning on playing strictly from your newest album this Saturday?
White: Definitely a mixture of all three albums, including the 7-inch that we released two years ago. If people shout out requests, we will play them. If we can remember. [laughs] It makes the experience more fun for us.
NS: What future plans does White Mystery have? Working on new material?
White: Yep! We host a 4/20 event every year. We announce the location in December. Last year it was in San Francisco; the year before that it was in New York.
