Ladies: Embrace the peplum, don’t fear it
September 5, 2013
One style of fashion that continues to stay trendy is the unique peplum.
Peplum is a style where a ruffled pleat goes around the base of a shirt or the mid-drift of a skirt. When worn correctly, the trend looks edgy, sweet, flirty or even office chic.
Over the years, women have been afraid to rock this trend, fearing it will make them look larger. When worn correctly, peplum creates the appearance of a small waist. The trick is to have the peplum top fit around the smallest part of your waist. When the ruffles are sitting too low is when the trend can look unflattering.
It is best to have the peplum be the main focus of the outfit, and don’t wear anything else too daring. This looks best with a pencil skirt, skinny or straight leg jeans. Too much volume on your legs and the peplum can go from sweet to sour.
Peplums often come in printed fabric. For this look, it is important to make sure the peplum is the only piece of clothing that has a pattern. Your skirt or top should be a solid color or you might be mistaken for a clown.
Once you have picked out the perfect peplum piece for your outfit, the last step is to pick out jewelry. If rocking a dress with peplum, skip a necklace and go with a bold earring. When wearing a peplum skirt, don a fun necklace. Wear stud earrings and a statement necklace with a peplum top to make sure the outfit isn’t too boring.
