Tough video game carries stiff series
June 25, 2013
Students interested in gaming should check out the Stanley Cup of video games during their break. The competitive League of Legends scene is picking back up as professional gamers make their way into the summer season.
The developer of League of Legends, Riot Games, runs a league for their game. The League of Legends Championship Series is the game’s equivalent to the NHL. In addition, there is a separate league for North America and Europe.
The competitive scene is entering its third season. The seasons divides into two eight-week splits, spring and summer. Each split includes eight teams and its own playoffs, which precede a promotion series. This promotion series decides who stays and who leaves during the intense series.
During this summer split, the North American League of Legends Championship Series has seen two new teams make an appearance and two make their exit. After Velocity eSports beat Team MRN and Cloud 9 defeated compLexity, gaming fans will say goodbye to old favorites and hello to some innovative and challenging teams.
Fans saw Cloud 9 emulate aggressive Korean strategies and Velocity use unconventional champion picks and strategies. The teams remaining in the series are going to have to continue to adapt to new strategies.
Week two is now in the books and teams are adapting faster than others. Two old teams brought new members in the summer split but are now on opposite ends of the rankings.
Counter Logic Gaming brought in new starters: Zach “Nientonsoh” Malhas to play in the top lane and Michael “Bigfatlp” Tang to start in the jungle. The team has managed early season victories against fan favorites like Team SoloMid and Cloud 9.
Another notewory team is Curse Gaming, which brought in Armenian all-star support player Edward “Edward” Abgaryan. The group ended the spring split in fourth place, facing some roster changes and turmoil toward the end of the split. Coming into spring with another new player, it faced many troubling loses and has an uphill battle as the split continues.
This summer split will be one for the books. It comes just in time as North America will face Europe and Asia with the season three World Championship later this year.
