‘Player vs. Pain’ show stirs controversy

By Patrick Pastrana

Kevin Pereira, the former host of G4TV’s “Attack of the Show,” is moving on to newer things in the video game and entertainment world.

Utilizing his new company Super Creative, Pereira has created a new online video series called Player vs. Pain. With the help of Machinima Prime on YouTube, Player vs. Pain is now a game show where two players can go head to head in a video game while being physically abused. The concept of the show is outrageous and definitely unique. Since its release, Player vs. Pain has received many mixed reviews. Half the comments on the videos are filled with hatred, while the other half of the comments are calm and positive. One-third of the positive comments are people who appreciate Pereira’s work and the content he provides.

On Ustream.tv/Deathsquad, Pereira has a weekly podcast and he has mentioned his thoughts on the feedback from the first episode. He saw the sea of negativity on YouTube and points out that he thought the first episode starting with “wedgies” while playing Mario Kart was hilarious. He laughed it off and thanks the people who gave a thumbs up, subscribed or left a positive comment. With about 2,000 ratings, Player vs. Pain has more than 100 likes and more than 700 dislikes.

Kevin started out the podcast by saying how the first two episodes to come out weren’t the right ones to start with. “When you launch a new series, you have to establish a tone for a show, before you [change] that tonality,” he said.

After he said that, I started to sympathize with where he was coming from. You can’t necessarily raise the bar to the highest extent for the first episode. Then, Kevin explained a possibility of why it is being hated, “We led off with two episodes that were the silliest in tone, instead of being fun and funny, and I think people thought the show was taking itself seriously,” he said.

Aside from Kevin, the Machinima Prime network is getting a lot of heat for contributing to the show’s production.

The first episode came out March 28 on YouTube and the second episode was released Thursday. For some unknown reason, the video was pulled from the channel and made private. A comment on the first episode’s video led me to a link where I could watch the second episode. The second episode was about two female magazine models getting electrified by electroshock pads while playing “Rock Band.” I had to agree with a few of the comments: Despite the fact that it was cheesy, it wasn’t in the best taste.

Kevin said, “On the 11th, you will see paintball, and I think that is the true tone of Player vs. Pain. The third episode will consist of two players playing ‘Halo’ while being shot with paintball guns. I honestly think that the third episode will be better, considering the pain factor will be much higher.”

Although Player vs. Pain has had a rough start, it’s too early to tell whether it’s ultimately finished. Maybe the third time’s the charm? The next episode will hit YouTube this week. If you want to give it a shot, head over to Youtube.com/user/MachinimaPrime.
