‘Doctor Who’ returns with a lackluster season opener

“Doctor Who” returned in an episode that may have had fans asking the question “When?” rather than “Who?”

As in, when will the writers give a detailed explanation of the newest companion?

A revamped TARDIS, Wi-Fi that steals souls and a new companion who may or may not be more than one person–Clara Oswald or Oswin Oswald?–can be found in the new season of “Doctor Who.”

After months of patiently waiting for “Doctor Who” to return, I was finally rewarded with a new episode. I thought some of my questions on the Doctor’s new companion would be answered. Man, was I wrong.

Saturday, the second half of season seven returned with an episode called, “The Bells of Saint John.” In the first part of the season, viewers were introduced to Oswin Oswald (Jenna-Louise Coleman). The second she appeared on screen I was obsessed with her. Later, I was heartbroken when it was revealed Oswin was a Dalek trapped in a mental hospital for Daleks, the Doctor’s oldest enemy. Daleks are metal extraterrestrial creatures that look like tanks and come in various colors.

In the first part of season seven, Oswin, now known as Clara Oswald, appeared in the Christmas special. I was once again reminded of why I loved her so much, until she was again killed off.

Going into the new episode, I was half expecting her to be killed again, which she almost was. I have very high expectations for Clara to be the Doctor’s (Matt Smith’s) newest companion. Since Amy Williams (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) were perfect, the new companion has to be outstanding–I mean, I have the same name as the previous companion. Why wouldn’t I love her?

This newest episode is set in the present time with Clara as a nanny–or governess, which the Doctor comments is old-fashioned–to some bratty kids. Clara is clueless on how to use a computer and Wi-Fi. Incidentally, the villain for this latest episode has a Wi-Fi connection that steals your soul. Clara logs onto the villain’s connection and gets “downloaded” into the Wi-Fi world where the villain can view her soul. The Doctor saves her just in time.

Clara shouldn’t have even had to be in that situation. Why wouldn’t she choose the Wi-Fi clearly labeled “house” and not the one with weird hieroglyphic markings?

The remainder of the episode features the pair trying to save the human race; in order to achieve this they must find the secret group that is downloading people. At one point the Doctor rides his anti-gravity motorcycle up a building and crashes into an office to save everyone. This part of the episode was important because it was the end, and at the last second, as always, everyone was rescued.

I was not that impressed with this storyline and it seems writers are struggling to come up with new villains. I will watch future episodes only because the chemistry between Coleman and Smith is great, but I really hope next week’s episode brings something new to the table.
