Springfield Mobile Vet Units reaches out to NIU campus
April 17, 2013
Wednesday’s thunderstorms didn’t hinder the Springfield Mobile Vet Unit’s first visit to NIU.
The Springfield Mobile Vet Unit is an RV-turned-office used to reach out to veterans at Illinois college and university campuses.
Various resources, like information on mental health assistance and disability claims for military students, were presented in Adams Hall due to the weather.
The DeKalb Veterans Assistance Commission and the Military Student Services were available to answer any questions military students may have.
John Mizer, readjustment counseling technician at the Department of Veterans Affairs, helped veterans and the families of veterans adjust from combat to civilian life. This assistance includes a range of duties, including individual and group counseling, substance abuse assessment and referrals and screenings for medical conditions.
“Despite the weather, we had a good turnout today,” Mizer said. “There was a large number of veterans who had requested information about the G.I. Bill, their medical records, and available counseling.”
