DeKalb could see mixed weather soon

Students shouldn’t be surprised if they see snow flurries this weekend, said NIU meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste.

April is a transition time for weather in northern Illinois, Sebenste said, and this Friday DeKalb should expect a cold rain that may be mixed with some snow.

“We did have a large amount of cold air that built up over the northern regions of the hemisphere this winter, and as a result spring came later this year to our area…,” Sebenste said. “The reason why its been so up and down is just a normal seasonal transition, but this year it’s definitely running later than in previous years because of all the cold air.”

Bronzella Cleveland, junior journalism and communications major, said the warm weather hasn’t affected her much yet.

“Since I don’t have my summer clothes here, I’m staying inside,” Cleveland said. “The weather is bipolar. I’d take the cold over the heat.”

Students try to fit in some recreation between term papers and finals, said Ashley Soderlund, junior history for secondary education major.

“Everyone’s trying to make plans between papers and finals to get their mind off of things, especially since it’s been so warm,” Soderlund said. “This is the weekend everyone tries to get out. I don’t mind the cold when it’s supposed to be cold, but the possibility of snow in May sucks.”

This summer will likely be a hot one, but the warm weather won’t really get started until June, Sebenste said.

“At this point, it’s still too early to call, but we do think that we will trend warmer, especially in June,” he said. “But for the first half of may it looks like we’re going to see dryer and cooler weather.”

Sebenste also said to expect some severe weather, but not right away.

“We don’t see any severe weather coming for at least another week or more, but it’s good to point out that later this month and into June, it’s more than a good bet that at some point we will see severe thunderstorms developing,” Sebenste said.
