Baseball looks for redemption against Bradley rematch
April 29, 2013
In a rematch from earlier this season, baseball will hit the road to take on Bradley in a midweek game today in Peoria.
The Huskies (18-23) will hope to fare better against the Braves (14-24) this time around as they handed the Huskies their worst loss of the season, 19-0, in a seven-inning affair.
“They put a whooping on us,” said head coach Ed Mathey. “…I think as much as coming back and facing the demons after a beating like that, you know it’s important for us to do things right and get repetitions.”
The Braves showed off their power against the Huskies as they belted four home runs over the fence at Ralph McKinzie Field. Two of those home runs came off the bat of sophomore Max Murphy. Murphy leads the Braves in home runs with five.
Sophomore Ben Nuemann will look to cool off the Braves’ bats this time around as he will get the start for the Huskies. Nuemann has made 15 appearances for the Huskies, all in relief. He has an ERA of 7.20 in 10 innings pitched with one recorded loss on the season.
“They can swing the bats really well if pitches are left over the plate,” Mathey said. “We need to pitch the ball better than we did the last time out.”
The Huskies are coming off a MAC series win over Miami (Ohio) at home as they won two out of three games. Junior Alex Klonowski led the Huskies at the plate as he went six for 13 with four RBI’s in the series, including a game-winning single on Saturday. Klonowski also leads the MAC in hits during conference play with 28.
“Alex is a good hitter,” Mathey said. “…He’s got a middle of the field approach, he’s a contact guy, he looks to work the ball from gap to gap and he gets a good level swing off. The middle of the field is your friend out there and even if he’s behind in the count he’s a dangerous hitter because he’s got some extension, he’s got some arm reach and he’s been doing a great job for us.”
The Braves will look to bounce back after they were swept in their weekend series by Illinois State.
