Local library embraces ‘the force’ during Star Wars event
April 21, 2013
The DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St., hosted its first Star Wars Extravaganza from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Activities included a make-your-own-lightsaber area, a trash compactor treasure search, a carbonite demonstration and a presentation on how a lightsaber works. Children used Nerf guns to hit paper targets of storm troopers, Darth Vader and other villains in a blaster game.
Once signed in, participants received a passport and headed inside for the activities.
“We had 300 passports; 200 were here and 100 at the Egyptian Theatre,” said Karen Tatlock, a volunteer at the event.
The library’s shelves were lined with more than 135 Star Wars books. Wanted posters for Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker and Han Solo were hung on the walls with bounties of 500,000 to 900,000 credits.
At the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St., there were raffle giveaways that included Blu-ray copies of the original trilogy. Collectors gave a presentation of their Star Wars materials.
“We are representing the new Star Wars games that have been coming out recently,” said James Hayes, New Game in Town employee. “The video games have been the most popular today, though.”
NIU Cares Day representatives were present at the theater, helping with tattoos and games tables.
“We have 20 to 30 groups going around everywhere and helping with what they can,” said graduate accountancy student William Tsang.
The library hopes to make this an annual event.
