Rifkin pleads not guilty
March 18, 2013
Former NIU police officer Andrew Rifkin pleaded not guilty on March 13 to charges of sexual assault.
“At this point we will defend Mr. Rifkin and continue with the not guilty plead,” said Rifkin attorney Bruce Brandwein.
An identical charge was dropped by Clay Campbell, former DeKalb County state’s attorney, less than four months ago. County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack said Campbell dropped the case without notifying the victim, so Rifkin was reindicted.
“We’re disappointed that the new state’s attorney chose to reindict,” Brandwein said.
If convicted, Rifkin faces up to 15 years in prison. He is suing the police department and university for mishandling his case.
