FBI, Illinois State Police executing search warrant on campus
March 6, 2013
FBI and state police officials executed a search warrant on NIU’s campus today.
According to a statement from NIU, the university is fully cooperating with the search. During a news conference, Brad Hoey, director of Communications and Marketing, said he wanted to emphasize that the FBI’s activity was not in response to a public safety concern.
A search of the NIU police station was conducted starting at about 8 a.m.
“It is not interrupting the public safety functions here at Northern Illinois University,” Hoey said.
Hoey said he did not know if the investigators would be out for the rest of the day.
FBI personnel were part of the search. Agent Joan Hyde of the FBI’s media office said she could not comment on what the agencies are looking for in their search because the investigators are subject to grand jury secrecy rules until charges are filed or arrests made, which has not happened yet. An Illinois State Police spokesman said the ISP would not comment.
“The search warrant is associated with an ongoing criminal investigation being conducted by the FBI, Illinois State Police, U.S. Department of Education Office of Inspector General, and Housing and Urban Development Office of Inspector General,” according to the FBI media advisory. “Today’s activity is not in response to any public safety concerns, and during the execution of the warrant, the public safety function of the NIU police department will continue uninterrupted.”
