‘Chivalry: Medieval Combat’ is good fun
February 25, 2013
It’s time to grab a sword and shield and yell at the top of your lungs and play Chivalry: Medieval Warfare.
Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is a download PC title available through Steam. It’s the first commercial released game by Torn Banner Studios who has released the game independently. The game takes place in fictional Medieval times in the Kingdom of Agatha. The Kingdom is being threatened by the Mason Order and each side find themselves in war.
The game controls like a first person shooter, but no shooting involved as players must rely on swords and axes to fight one another. The game is only online multiplayer with servers hosting different games. In order to swing their weapon, players use the mouse. A left click delivers a horizontal swipe of their weapon while a right click brings a block. By moving the mouse wheel up, the player can stab or move the mouse wheel down to bring an overhead swing. The combat is very violent leading to arms being cut off, beheadings, and body exploding from extreme force, impaled, and number of other deaths. It is also slightly disturbing to the amount of blood there is as well as the gurgling noises of knights dying in their own blood, but very realistic.
There are four classes in the game: Archer, Man-At-Arms, Vangaurd, and Knight. The Archer class is difficult to master getting used to limited supply of arrows and having to shoot afar at opposing soldiers. However once done so in a good position, it’s easy to take down others having a large distance vantage. Man- At-Arms is a quick soldier with one handed weapons from maces to swords and small axes being able to jump quickly away from attacks and easily moved around enemies and attack from behind. Vangarud have long weapons that they run forward with charging to run and stab enemies and have a long range to attack others. Knights are slow but make up in armor defense and power taking down other with a single swing. Each class has a variety of weapons, with three slots of weapon inventory.
Gameplay is a fun experience causing players to think on the battlefield. Sparing matches can go a long time between two soldiers if they effectively block or dodge each other’s attacks. There are a number of gameplay modes including Team Objective, Team Deathmatch, Last Team Standing, Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, and Free-For-All. There’s also a Duel mode where players face each other one-on-one in to see who is the best. All the modes come in a variety of maps, many of them used on several different maps creating several environments to fight in.
The game is also fun with several different sever modifications, a number of them common in servers. Such custom modes includes no long-range weapons, fists only fightings, and low gravity servers leaving knights jumping high into the air. There are some glitches in the game here and there, it’s still being updated by Torn Banner Studio with the promise of more downloadable content for free in the future. If you’re looking for an epic adventure, this may not be what you’re looking for. If you’re ready to hack, slash, and smash with others online giving battle cries the entire time (the C key is dedicated to giving out a number of battle cries) then this is a fun game to download and play. CHHHHHAAARRGGGGEEEEEE!!!
